Sidekick 1.5b1 is a beta release. It adds one new feature to Sidekick - Compress AppleWorks 6. This feature helps moving Appleworks to a new Mac. A compressed copy of your AppleWorks 6 folder is created and a Spotlight search for AppleWorks documents is shown.

The compressed copy of AppleWorks can be copied to a new Mac and will work as expected. The Spotlight search will identify any AppleWorks documents you wish to copy to a new Mac.

Apple released Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard yesterday. AppleWorks will not launch under 10.6 unless Rosetta is installed. Rosetta emulates a PowerPC chip and allows applications like AppleWorks to work on a Mac with an Intel processor.

My testing suggests that AppleWorks works as expected running in Rosetta under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Sidekick hasn't been as lucky. My testing found that Sidekick has a few issues relating to the Send Selection feature. These problems will be fixed shortly with the release of version 1.4.2.

October 2007

The latest versions of Sidekick and AppleWorks are both compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 (aka Leopard).

Macworld UK reported this week that Apple is no longer selling AppleWorks, and that the AppleWorks web page redirects to AppleWorks Support.

The successor to AppleWorks is iWork. With the release of iWork '08 last week we have a word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation package that can open the equivalent AppleWorks documents.

There are still many users of AppleWorks so I will be maintaining Sidekick for their use. At this stage, I'm unsure of Sidekick and AppleWorks compatability with Mac OS X 10.5 (aka Leopard). I'll provide an update in October when Leopard is released.
